Trabeculectomy

 WHAT IS TRABECULECTOMY?

Trabeculectomy is a surgical procedure performed at Triangle Eye Institute to treat open-angle and closed-angle glaucoma. With this type of approach, a small opening is made in the eye wall, establishing a channel through which fluid can drain and relieve pressure within the eye. Dr. Yaplee uses state-of-the-art devices (or setons), such as Ahmed™ glaucoma valve (AGV), Molteno® glaucoma shunt implant, and XEN® Gel Stent implant for safe, effective results. While there are a number of techniques used to manage and treat glaucoma symptoms, trabeculectomy is an advanced surgical procedure and requires the refined expertise of a glaucoma specialist. Board-certified ophthalmologist Dr. Steven Yaplee offers his years of meticulous training and experience in diagnosing and treating glaucoma, which is one of the leading reasons for permanent vision loss and blindness. To learn if trabeculectomy is right for treating your glaucoma condition, please schedule a consultation at Triangle Eye Institute in Bakersfield, CA.

Frequently Asked Questions

HOW IS TRABECULECTOMY PERFORMED?

Dr. Yaplee may recommend trabeculectomy if you have advanced glaucoma, later-stage glaucoma, or glaucoma that is not responding to other treatments. After providing a numbing solution, he will create a small opening in the top of the eye beneath your upper eyelid while leaving a small flap of the sclera (white part of the eye) to cover and protect the area. This generates a filtration bleb, or small bubble, to allow fluid to drain more easily and be naturally absorbed by the body. Antibiotics or other topical medications may then be applied to the area to help prevent infection and scar tissue formation. Trabeculectomies are performed on an outpatient basis at our surgical center and generally take less than an hour to complete.
