YAG Laser Capsulotomy

What is a yag laser capsulotomy?

Cataract surgery removes a clouded lens and replaces it with an artificial intraocular lens to improve your sight. In some cases, the natural membrane that surrounds the new lens thickens over time, causing a nighttime glare, cloudiness, or haziness within your vision. Since artificial lenses are not susceptible to cataracts, the cloudiness and other conditions that appear are generally due to a very treatable condition known as posterior capsule opacification (PCO). At Triangle Eye Institute, skilled ophthalmologist Dr. Steven Yaplee performs a simple procedure called a YAG laser capsulotomy to treat PCO. If you have blurry vision following traditional or laser cataract surgery, please contact our Bakersfield, CA ophthalmology and eye care center to schedule a laser capsulotomy consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is a laser capsulotomy performed?

A YAG laser capsulotomy is a simple outpatient procedure provided in our modern surgical suite. These services generally only take about 10 – 15 minutes to complete and carry little to no downtime. Before getting started, Dr. Yaplee may dilate and numb your eye with special drops. He will then use our advanced YAG laser to target the back of the lens capsule and create a micro-opening. This removes the cloudy film from the area and enables light to properly pass through the lens, sharpening your vision once again. Our eye doctor and team will talk with you about what to expect as your eye recovers. A number of patients experience vision improvement within 24 hours after their procedure.

Treat Post-cataract Blurry Vision

While not all patients who have cataract surgery will require a capsulotomy procedure, it is a relatively common treatment that should be performed by an eye care specialist. If you experience blurry vision following lens replacement, we invite you to schedule a visit with Dr. Yaplee at Triangle Eye Institute in Bakersfield and Delano, CA. Our knowledgeable team can review the benefits of YAG laser capsulotomy, discuss insurance coverage, and help you find the solutions needed to enjoy clearer vision.
