Laser Iridotomy

WHAT IS LASER IRIDOTOMY?

Glaucoma is a collection of eye conditions characterized by increased pressure within the eye, which can damage the optic nerve and lead to vision loss. While there is a range of options used to treat the various forms of glaucoma, laser iridotomy has proven effective at addressing closed-angle and narrow-angle glaucoma. The angle is the area between the iris and cornea that houses the trabecular meshwork, which guides the flow of fluid within the eye. When the angle is too narrow or closed off, this fluid will not channel properly and can create damaging eye pressure. Laser iridotomy has been used to treat closed-angle glaucoma for over three decades. If you suffer from glaucoma, we invite you to schedule a visit with Dr. Steven Yaplee at Triangle Eye Institute in Bakersfield, CA to learn about laser iridotomy and other types of care.

Frequently Asked Questions

HOW DOES LASER IRIDOTOMY WORK?

Laser iridotomy may be performed in a number of glaucoma cases, ranging from being a preventive measure in patients at risk for closed-angle glaucoma to emergency treatment for relieving eye pressure. Patients may have a greater chance of developing narrow- or closed-angle glaucoma if they have diabetes, farsightedness, cataracts, or shorter eyes. To perform laser iridotomy, Dr. Yaplee will use a targeted beam of light to make a small opening in the outer portion of the iris to access and widen the angle. This can help enhance fluid flow within the eye and relieve the buildup of pressure within the eye. Laser iridotomy is performed on-site at our modern facility and generally only takes about 5 – 10 minutes to complete.

CLOSED-ANGLE GLAUCOMA CARE

Ultimately, the goal of laser iridotomy treatment is to prevent the onset of glaucoma or manage an existing glaucoma condition and preserve your vision. To learn if this closed- and narrow-angle glaucoma treatment option is right for you, please schedule a visit with Dr. Yaplee at Triangle Eye Institute in Bakersfield and Delano, CA. We will be happy to review the benefits of laser iridotomy, explain any insurance coverage, and help you maintain optimal eye health.
