Cataract Surgery

What Is Cataract Surgery?

Cataracts refer to cloudiness within the natural lens of your eye and usually develop in patients over 40. While lifestyle changes and new glasses or contacts may be helpful for some individuals with cataracts, many men and women in Bakersfield, CA need cataract surgery to improve their vision. Performed at the hands of skilled ophthalmologist Dr. Steven Yaplee, cataract surgery removes the cloudy lens from the eye and replaces it with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). At Triangle Eye Institute, we are proud to offer innovative diagnostic technologies and treatments for cataracts, including traditional and laser cataract surgery and premium intraocular lens options, like multifocal or toric lenses. Schedule a visit today to find out how traditional or laser cataract surgery might help you enjoy clearer vision.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is cataract surgery performed?

Cataract surgery is an outpatient procedure that is performed on-site at our surgery center and only takes about 5 – 15 minutes to complete. With advanced cataract surgery, Dr. Yaplee will numb the eye, make a micro-incision in the cornea, and use ultrasonic energy to break up the cloudy area. Modern advanced has the same goal as traditional surgery except that laser energy is utilized to make the incision and disintegrate the cataract. After the cataract is removed, an artificial lens will be implanted within your eye. For patients with myopia, hyperopia, and presbyopia, custom multifocal implant lenses (PanOptix®) can serve as prescription lenses and reduce the need for glasses or contacts. Toric implant lenses are specially created for patients with astigmatism, or a distorted curvature of the cornea.
